Fertile green valleys, castles and bastides, fortified villages, gently meandering rivers, lush pastures, wine, walnuts, geese for foie gras and the warm southern sun - This is Dordogne!


 


DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
Day 1: Individual arrival in Souillac

Once at your hotel you can take some time to visit the Benedictine monastery from the 12th century. See the remarkable abbey-church with fine carvings, and a statue of the prophet Isaiah, a masterpiece of the Romanesque art. Overnight in a charming hotel.

 

Day 2: Souillac - Salignac (30 km)

Your first day riding is easy and follows the valley with many visits but importantly, you have plenty of time to spend in your destination, the gardens of Eyrignac. A nice castle to visit when you arrive in Salignac.

 

Day 3: Salignac - Les Eyzies (47 km)

A leisure ride today to St Genies, a typical village and then nice views from the castle of Losse in the valley of the Vézère River. Beautiful panorama's along the way until La Roque-St-Christophe, fantastic cliffs with many caves. In Les Eyzies de Tayac, a world famous prehistoric center, discover the well-known archaeological wealth and underground caves.

Day 4: Ride around Les Eyzies

A longer ride today, you will want to start early to spend more time in Les Eyzies in order to visit the grottos. Be sure to visit the chateau village of Beynac perched up on a cliff top as well.

Day 5: Les Eyzies - Sarlat - Vitrac (34 km)

The ride from Les Eyzies takes you through Montignac where along the way are the famous Lascaux and  Lascaux II's grottos. In Sarlat, a medieval town, you have a variety of sites and ambiance typical of the Perigord region.

Day 6: Around Vitrac (37 km)

You can visit the grottos of Cougnac and then you come to the Dordogne River valley where you start to discover many of the area chateaux. You will have time to visit the Chateau and fortified village of Domme overlooking the river. La Roque Gageac is an old river port pressed against the cliffside.

Day 7: Vitrac - Souillac (32 km)

Returning now to the starting point, you will follow the Dordogne River and along the way pass the chateaux of Veyrignac and Fenelon. Return to same hotel as the first night with dinner again.

Day 8: Journey home or extension of stay

After breakfast your cycling tour comes to an end and you may begin your journey home. We would also be more than happy to extend your stay in Europe.

Rate:

EASY TO MODERATE: Flat contour along quiet country trails. A few low hills are encountered. You cycle mostly on dedicated cycle paths and some quiet country roads. Suitable for novices, families and experienced cyclists alike.

 

Airport / Transfers

The nearest major airport is Toulouse (160km). There are regular trains between Toulouse and Souillac.

For passengers travelling from Paris, the best way is by express train to Brive la Gaillarde (4 hours), then the local train from there (approx. cost is $75.00).
