We start this exciting one-week itinerary with a traverse of the peninsula from La Paz to the West Coast. This 3-hour journey by van crosses the southern-most extension of the Sierra Giganta Mountains and the westward sloping Magdalena Plain.
At the site, we leave behind the unique desert vegetation for red, black and white mangrove estuaries, typical of our paddling area in the northern end of Magdalena Bay. The intense Baja sun coupled with calm shallows causes a dramatic increase in water temperature.
The extensive lagoons of Magdalena Bay have for thousands of years witnessed and hosted grey whale mating and birthing. A 5000-mile annual migration from the Bering Sea to these lagoons makes this area the world's largest whale nursery and is the stage of an incredible survival story.
